How it works

The surgeon operates from a remote SSi Mantra console connected to the patient-side system over a secure, high-bandwidth network.

  • A qualified surgical team is present at the patient's side throughout the procedure.
  • The remote surgeon views the field in 3D and controls the instruments in real time.
  • Network performance is monitored during the procedure, and the patient-side team is prepared to continue locally if required.
  • The same platform supports teleproctoring of surgeons in training.
Telesurgery architecture: the remote surgeon's console connects through firewalls, network switches and an internet service provider to the SSi Mantra system in the operating room, with encoded and decoded 3D video at each end

Milestones in robotic telesurgery

  1. The first telesurgery with SSi MantraA cholecystectomy by Dr. R. K. Misra during clinical trials, connecting SS Innovations headquarters with a hospital in Gurugram. 4 km, 10 to 15 ms latency.
  2. Regulatory approval in IndiaCDSCO approval for telesurgery and teleproctoring with SSi Mantra 3, the first in India.
  3. First robotic cardiac telesurgeriesPerformed by Dr. Sudhir Srivastava between Gurugram and Jaipur.
  4. First intercontinental robotic cardiac telesurgeryAtrial septal defect closure, operated from IRCAD, Strasbourg, France, on a patient at Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences, Indore. More than 4,000 miles.
  5. MantrAsanaFirst telesurgery performed with the compact tele-surgeon console.
  6. Approvals in Indonesia and the PhilippinesSSi Mantra cleared for telesurgery in both countries.
  7. Guyana to IndiaRobotic LIMA takedown operated from Georgetown Public Hospital, Guyana, on a patient in Indore. Approximately 12,500 miles of fiber, with 290 to 300 ms latency.
  8. Colombia to IndiaRobotic sleeve gastrectomy operated from Hospital Internacional de Colombia, Bucaramanga, on a patient at Mohak Bariatrics and Robotics, Indore. More than 13,600 miles.
  9. First telesurgery within the PhilippinesBetween Pampanga and Cotabato, approximately 1,070 miles.

MantrAsana

A compact tele-surgeon console. The surgeon operates seated, with hand controllers, a 3D display and foot controls in one self-contained workstation that can be deployed wherever a remote procedure is needed.

The first telesurgery with the tele-surgeon console was performed in October 2025.

SSi MantraM

A mobile tele-surgical unit, unveiled in March 2025, to bring remote surgery to underserved areas. SSi MantraM now tours hospitals so surgeons and theatre teams can take the console where they practise.
